| Gemma had slept for the three or four hours Nikto's exploration had taken place, but still tired was trying to shake the sleep from her eyes. Understanding how difficult it was going to be, as she felt so tired, she went toward the water where she slapped some cold ocean water on her face. Feeling better, she returned to her brother. -What? -While you slept, I have found a nice boat, a perfect boat that will take us not only to that island but even around our planet. -As always you exaggerate. -No I don't. Nikto's happiness was contagious, and even more so to someone like Gemma, who couldn't be angry for a long time. Her smile shone in her face and taking her brother's arm pulled him along. -Let's go, is it far? -Like one hour from here. I took more time because it was well hidden, you know. The two kids walked under the light of the stars' to where he had found the boat; soon after they arrived. -Here you have it. Isn't it magnificent? -Yes, yes it is. But don't you have any pity with the owners? Maybe this is their only means of sustenance. They have hidden it so well! -I promise that when we return we will pay them back, we will pay them very well. And we will return the boat. But Gem, we have to do this, you know? -I don't think so, but as you will. Between the two of them the pushed the boat over the water; Nikto carried the oars, and they climbed on board. -Ready? -Yes. -Ok, hold the oars while I push the boat out. Nikto jumped back to shore pushing against the prow to make the boat lose upon the water. He then climbed back into the boat, starting to row. -Do you need help? -No, not now. Perhaps when we are farther from the coast, rest now. -Why didn't you find one with auto propulsion? -Are you crazy? They keep those chained, under lock and key. Be happy we could get our hands on this one. -Hmm. For a while, Nikto rowed, while Gemma listened to the soft sound the oars made going in and out of the water. -Hey, Nicky, it's very dark, eh? -We must be near daybreak. It's always darker at that time. -Yes, perhaps that's it. A while later. -Nik, wouldn't you get lost? I don't know how you can even see where we are going. -Quiet woman! I am following the stars! Look, that one! He stopped suddenly. -What, what star? I don't see any. -That's precisely what happens. Up to now I have been following a star that the fish people told me is always to the north. They use it to navigate when all else fails. But I can't see it now. Nikto continued peering around, searching. -Oh Nicky, I'm afraid. -Fear, fear. No one is afraid her. Calm down, it must be a passing cloud. He continued rowing. Somewhat later, the sky began to clear with the first rays of the coming sun. But the sky was covered by dark clouds, those clouds that forebode one of those strong, furious storms common in these regions. The children searched the horizon, trying to find land where they could pass the storm. Nothing was visible. -Brother, by the Sun, there's a storm coming and we have nowhere to go! -I see that. Come and help me row because the current has gotten very strong. -Aren't you afraid? -Yes, but how would it help saying it. Let's just mind about finding any land now. Both were rowing with all their might, towards where Nikto remembered the north lay, but the waves were getting bigger and stronger, shaking the little boat as a leaf in the storm. A wave, even stronger than before, hit the oar Gemma was using, pulling it out of her blistered hands and hitting her on the chest. -Don't let it go, don't let it go. The oar! He stopped crying because there was no more sense to it. The oar was out of their hands, floating some feet apart from them. -Here, hold on to this one, he said and threw himself to the ocean. He knew that without that oar they would be lost, but this one moved farther away from them and soon he realized he would never catch it. -Nicky please, come back, come back here! He wasn't used anymore to pay attention to her, but he realized there was nothing else he could do, so he started swimming towards the little boat that was leaving him behind. -Nicky, brother, swim harder, come one! The child, making a supreme effort got nearer to the boat. -The oar! He claimed, almost submerged- the oar. Gemma looked at him astonished but sudden understanding made her put the remaining oar forth, towards her brother. She held it hard, and soon Nikto was able to climb aboard. They were cold, wet and frightened, and held to each other in the middle of the boat. -Brother, my little brother! I thought I was going to lose you! She said, crying. -And I thought I would become fish food, I was really very afraid Gemma. Thanks for saving me. -And what do we do now? We have no way to guide this boat, and the storm is so strong. -Let's tie the oar to use it as a rudder. That will perhaps keep us in one direction and don't go around in circles. Suddenly he heard a terrible cry from Gemma. Nikto looked back and saw something that made him shudder in terror. A huge wave bore down on them, crushing the boat and swallowing them. |
